Senior Feature: A Rising Star in Cybersecurity
At just 17 years old, Jack Salzman is already making a significant impact in the field of cybersecurity and information technology (IT). Salzman is an inquisitive cybersecurity-focused student at Kaiserslautern High School, and is poised to make a lasting impact in the world of IT. His insatiable curiosity and extensive knowledge of IT have turned him into a sought-after resource for students and staff throughout the school.
Salzman's interests span a wide range of disciplines. From computer science to swimming, piano, photography, and even cooking, he’s a true renaissance teenager. But it’s his dedication to cybersecurity that truly sets him apart. As the captain of the CyberPatriot team at KHS, Salzman's has not only built two computers but also designed an entire network for the team. Their mission? To secure computer systems and networks by identifying and patching vulnerabilities.
From vulnerability to solutions, Jack's journey into cybersecurity and information technology has led him to be the captain of the CyberPatriot team and a key member of the Stellar Explorers Space Design team, which made it to the national semi-finals this year. He recently led his STEM team to build an atmospheric experiment using UV sensors and two Raspberry PI microcomputers to measure UV radiation in near space via a High-Altitude Balloon (HAB) which took second place, and his team received a scholarship.
When he discovered vulnerabilities within the school’s computer system, he promptly reported them to his computer science teacher, Mr. Ken Robinson. These reports were then escalated to the school’s IT service desk technician, Angel Friasmartes. Jack’s vigilance helped keep sensitive information secure within the school environment.
“Jack Salzman is the most inquisitive cybersecurity-focused student I have ever had the pleasure to teach. Jack's knowledge of Information Technology (IT) is so extensive that students from throughout the school seek him out for advice on a range of topics. Topics range from laptop repair and VPNs to more involved technologies such as cryptography and authentication methods. This student is bound to do great things in the world of IT, especially in the area of cybersecurity,” stated Ken Robinson, Salzman's CyberPatriot sponsor and the Cybersecurity teacher.
Word of Jack’s skill set reached across DoDEA Europe. Dr. Justin White, the IT Division Chief at DODEA Europe, took notice. Dr. White offered to mentor Jack, providing invaluable guidance and opportunities to work on real-world projects. Salzman's parents were equally supportive, recognizing their son’s potential in the IT and cybersecurity field. Recently, Salzman's achieved a significant milestone: he earned the CompTIA Security+ certification. This globally recognized credential validates essential skills for performing core security functions. It’s no surprise that Salzman's dedication paid off. With Security+, he can officially submit vulnerability reports and contribute to securing the school network.
Salzman also completed the Network+ exam, further enhancing his qualifications. His dream? To study Cyber Security at Saarland University and eventually contribute to safeguarding critical systems, including those protecting American servicemembers—like his mom.
His advice to other high school students is clear: “Prepare for and take certification exams, such as Network+, A+, or Security+. They are invaluable in converting enthusiasm into experience and income.” He emphasizes that certifications can also translate into college credit, opening doors to higher education.
Salzman’s journey from curious student to certified cybersecurity enthusiast is an inspiring one. As he continues to learn, grow, and contribute, we can expect great things from this young talent. Keep an eye out for Jack—he’s destined to be a trusted defender of digital environments.
